Editor’s Note: I’m a tremendous lover of cinema. One of my favorite ever jobs was writing movie reviews, and I still write them to this day just for fun. I always sort of follow awards hype, hoping that movies I particularly loved scoop up a few deserving wins. Even though Oscar nominations are well known to be a matter of money and influence more than quality, sometimes excellent movies do in fact win. The Return of the King and Mad Max: Fury Road were (in my opinion) amazing movies that both scooped many Oscars the years they were nominated, and I was so happy that you’d think I was personally involved in their production. I feel competitive, protective, and either elated (“they won!”) or indignant (“they were robbed!”) regarding movies that resonated with me during Oscar season. Our favorite movies say quite a lot about us, after all. It’s not so weird that it feels personal.
