Michael Ramirez: Just Below the Surface 6-9-25
From America's Premier Editorial Cartoonist
Rising from the depths. -Michael
Editor’s Note: I never thought that antisemitism of all things would be on my 2025 bingo card. Every American since the 1940s has been educated not only about the ugliness of hatred and prejudice, but the unique and horrific ordeals the Jewish people, specifically, have been subjected to in all-too-recent history. Anne Frank was more than a brave and beloved hero to me. She might have been my sister or my friend, and I fiercely believed that even if terrifying and powerful people turned up at the door, I would never, ever betray her. I would be incapable of it, just as much as I would be incapable of hating her for being Jewish.
Germany, too, takes educating students on this dark mark in their history very seriously. Not only is it against the law to deny the Holocaust, but I learned when I was in Germany around a decade ago that schoolchildren went on field trips to concentration camps and “German pride” wasn't really a thing. It was heavily discouraged. I was told that Germans abroad were likely to say that they were European, such was the stain of overly enthusiastic German nationalism turning into something else, entirely.
I guess I’m naive. The Jewish people I’ve spoken with recently are sadly unsurprised with the recent surge in American antisemitism, but I’m gobsmacked. It’s not only acceptable in some circles, but fashionable. It’s in vogue to the point where you can easily find leftists cheering for Hamas, not because the terrorist organization is so incredibly sympathetic, but because they oppose Israel.
Redefining words, or twisting and weaseling around with them beyond recognition, is a grotesque game. Under the coat of pink-and-blue paint, “trans rights” are still blatant misogyny. Under the soft bigotry of liberal DEI policies lies the ugly racism of low expectations. And of course, hating the Jews is A-OK on the left, just as long as you make sure to call them “Zionists.”
We are not even a century removed from the Holocaust. There are still living survivors of that astonishing tragedy. It breaks my heart that in their lifetime, they don’t just have to contend with Holocaust deniers, but are being called genocidal nazis for supporting Israel.
Unfortunately, irony coming full-circle this way was very much on my 2025 bingo card. Democrats have been undermining their supposed values and ideals so consistently that even the most naive could see that coming.

Thank you for supporting Michael’s editorial cartooning and writing at this great independent space. And thank you, most of all, for standing up for free speech and truth, both of which are under attack everywhere.
We’ll see you soon with more of Michael’s work, and as always, let us know what you think in the comments, or drop us a line at ramireztoons@gmail.com
As you can imagine, we receive many emails, and Michael reads everything you send with one exception: I regret that I cannot share your cartoon ideas. As an editorial artist, every original cartoon he publishes must spring from within his mind, though I will happily forward your good wishes, complaints, concerns about issues, or opinions about politicians who seem to make a mess of everything. Michael tries to keep his finger on the pulse of America, so what’s on your mind? What can we do better? Let us know in the comments or by emailing the editor, Bree Lindquist, at breelinguist@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you and will do our best to respond soon.
Best,
Melissa Praemonitus (personal manager for Michael P. Ramirez)
