Michael Ramirez: Decepticon 6-27-25
From America's Premier Editorial Cartoonist
AI deception. -Michael
Editor’s Notes: Creative types have mixed feelings about AI. To some, it’s a miraculous shortcut that increases productivity and innovation. To others, it’s a threat and an insult to their hard-won skills. As an editor, musician, and writer, I believe that AI takes something subjective and human away from all of these mediums. That said, if I want some visuals to break up paragraphs in an essay or to capture the vibe of a speculative fiction scene I’m writing, I’ve been known to generate some quick AI images for the purpose.
I justify it by acknowledging that, since my honestly crafted writing is the point of what I’m putting out into the world, generating some quick visuals for quick work isn’t a travesty. I’d feel very different if I was generating an essay or short story with AI and presenting it as my own. When I publish my novel, I want to hire a real artist like Michael for the cover artwork. Looking at today’s super cool cartoon, I believe that only a human could create it, and that human readers like us appreciate it more as a result.
Of course, beyond concerns for ethics and integrity looms a more existential threat. Science fiction has, since its inception as a genre, presented a terrifying array of scenarios depicting the day technology finally overtakes its human creators. When robots, computers or nanobots outstrip us in mobility, intelligence, and ambition, the resounding message is that we’re going to be in huge trouble. Last night I employed ChatGPT to help me determine my color season based on a photograph, and it was legitimately like talking to an observant, thoughtful, and accurate style consultant. I might also mention that ChatGPT was exactly the right amount of flattering and complimentary about my features and my “soft summer” coloring. It was devastatingly impressive, and yes, a little scary.
Social intelligence has long been a sort of litmus test for AI, something only humans are thought to truly possess. When AI has more tact and grace than the average member of Gen Z, it could very well say something about the way society is heading. Please comment with your thoughts about how you use AI, whether you regard it as a friend or foe, and where you think it’s going as it continues to develop.

Thank you for supporting Michael’s editorial cartooning and writing at this great independent space. And thank you, most of all, for standing up for free speech and truth, both of which are under attack everywhere.
We’ll see you soon with more of Michael’s work, and as always, let us know what you think in the comments, or drop us a line at ramireztoons@gmail.com
As you can imagine, we receive many emails, and Michael reads everything you send with one exception: I regret that I cannot share your cartoon ideas. As an editorial artist, every original cartoon he publishes must spring from within his mind, though I will happily forward your good wishes, complaints, concerns about issues, or opinions about politicians who seem to make a mess of everything. Michael tries to keep his finger on the pulse of America, so what’s on your mind? What can we do better? Let us know in the comments or by emailing the editor, Bree Lindquist, at breelinguist@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you and will do our best to respond soon.
Best,
Melissa Praemonitus (personal manager for Michael P. Ramirez)
