Editor’s Note: Donald Trump placing so many (already overpriced) eggs in the tariff basket has the world watching and wondering what good will come of it. Our indebted nation increasing government revenue might be a decent outcome. Boosting consumption of our domestic industries could be another. A lot is riding on Trump’s wager, specifically rising prices in a strained economy with a disappearing middle class.
In 1906, renaissance wordsmith Alfred Henry Lewis said, “There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy.” I appreciate much of what Donald Trump is doing in his first weeks in office to roll back some of the wasteful excesses and ideological assaults on basic truth from the left. All the same, I question how increasing costs resulting from tariffs will affect his working and middle-class supporters.
