Happy Sunday,
Talk about bad memories! Both Michael and I remember the Carter years; for me, it meant doing without and being chilly all winter as my parents turned down the thermostat. We all wore sweaters indoors. I knew my Dad would find a way to support us, but inflation and a serious downturn in the economy ground economic growth to a halt. Homebuilding, my father’s business, floundered and died. Young people today can’t imagine paying 10% to borrow money, but we remember it all too well. My father, entrepreneurial to the end, shifted gears and invested in 50+ Pac Man, Donkey Kong, and Frogger machines, then split the profits with convenience store owners, which kept our family afloat for years, but all of our builder friends went out of business.
We have inflation, and if the Biden administration continues to follow Carter’s instincts, price controls are not far behind. Today’s young people may yet be introduced to the joys of rationed gas. Do you think that we are headed to 70’s style malaise, or are we already there? Please leave a comment below. —Melissa
