Michael Ramirez: Artificial Intelligence 05-21-23
From America's Premier Editorial Cartoonist
President Biden's age has put the focus back on newly appointed A.I. Czar, Vice President Kamala who will oversee the responsible development of artificial intelligence.—Michael
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Artificial intelligence and Kamala Harris go hand in hand or foot in mouth, as the case may be.
President Biden recently named Vice President Harris the new A.I Czar.
This is the same Kamala Harris that President Biden put in charge of stemming the tide of illegal immigration and the surge of undocumented children.
According to government statistics, monthly migrant encounters had fallen to 16,182 in April of 2020. Vice President Harris was appointed in March of 2021. By May of 2022, monthly migrant encounters had grown to 224,370.
You might remember in February of this year, the Biden administration claimed their new border measures were working. A day later, Vice President Harris touted the “success” of her “Root Causes” strategy.
Ironically, a week before those proclamations, an NBC news analysis of government data revealed that since March of 2021, “nearly 600,000 migrants have been released into the country without being charged or given a date to appear in court” and thousands were dropped from the government tracking program…

January is usually a slow month for border crossings. This year, the Border Patrol reported only 156,274 encounters. That was significant for two reasons. Although it was higher than last year’s 154,874 encounters it was a “sharp drop” from the 251,978 encounters in the month before, and it was the first time in ten months that the numbers were below 200,000.
In January of 2021, prior to Vice President Kamala taking the helm, they had only 78,414 encounters.
I don’t know… but that doesn’t seem to be much of a success story to me.
Last month, migrant encounters rose to 211,401. That was a 10% increase from March.
The “significance of the passage of time,” is that things just seem to be getting worse under her leadership. And America is now facing something even more significant than Kamala’s passage of time…
I’m not talking about the challenge of interpreting exactly what Vice President Harris is attempting to say on a day-to-day basis or the challenge posed to America by appointing her to be in charge of anything beyond attending state funerals. I am talking about the evolution of Artificial Intelligence, and the significant challenge and dangers it may pose to humanity.
The challenge that A.I. poses to commerce through the replacement of workers, seems small compared to the creation of sentient machines who process material through the confluence of a filtered accumulation of data, the seemingly logical but imperfect and subjective nature of programming, and prompting, bias, and interpretability based on algorithms designed by fallible human engineering.
While it is easy to see through the context of her speeches that the Vice President’s intelligence does indeed seem to be artificial, and the wealth of experience she may have in modifying existing large language models is conducted on a weekly basis, that hardly qualifies her to be A.I. Czar.
As the increase of the usage of A.I. broadens to real-world applications, the increase in capability and integration into our security and societal infrastructure will grow, and the chances of losing control over these self-evolving, independent, conscious and self-aware machines increases exponentially.
What is needed now, is the careful plodding navigation into A.I., with a thoughtful and meticulous deliberation of each step. Choosing competent leadership is critical. It is not “time for us to do what we have been doing. And that time is every day.” It is time to pause, reflect, and studiously plan how we incorporate A.I. into the new world.
If the Vice President’s record of protecting the border and solving our nation’s immigration problems are any indication, Skynet will soon be in charge, and something far more important than our borders and the English language will be terminated before you know it.
Have a great week,
Best,
-m
