Editor’s Note: A long time ago, I learned that sometimes a situation is just overall terrible, the best-case scenario is a pipe dream, and there’s nothing uplifting you can possibly say about it except offering to pray. But not everyone is religious, and praying isn’t always appreciated, nor are chipper assurances that things will be OK or proving that you don’t understand the situation at all by openly hoping for the best, impossible outcome. There is one simple and magical phrase that can do a lot of heavy lifting and cover many situations in which you have empathy, but are ultimately powerless to change a course of events.
“I hope that things go as well as they can.”
Aunt Vivian’s cancer came back? The Johnsons’ sick baby will probably not get bumped up the transplant list in time? Grandma rallied, but the hospice nurse says this time actually is the end? “I hope that things go as well as they can” covers every possibility from a miraculous divine intervention to simply an end that is somewhat peaceful and relatively free from pain. In these cases, that’s all you can realistically hope for. It’s always enough, because it has to be.
Anyway, that pretty much sums up my feelings about Ukraine.

Thank you for supporting Michael’s editorial cartooning and writing at this great independent space. And thank you, most of all, for standing up for free speech and truth, both of which are under attack everywhere.
We’ll see you soon with more of Michael’s work, and as always, let us know what you think in the comments, or drop us a line at ramireztoons@gmail.com
As you can imagine, we receive many emails, and Michael reads everything you send with one exception: I regret that I cannot share your cartoon ideas. As an editorial artist, every original cartoon he publishes must spring from within his mind, though I will happily forward your good wishes, complaints, concerns about issues, or opinions about politicians who seem to make a mess of everything. Michael tries to keep his finger on the pulse of America, so what’s on your mind? What can we do better? Let us know in the comments or by email. We would love to hear from you and will do our best to respond soon.
Best,
Melissa Praemonitus (editor and personal manager for Michael P. Ramirez)
