Editor’s Note: For years I was a “both sides” kind of lady regarding the highly complex conflict between Palestine and Israel. Following the horrifying events of October 7, 2023, I could no longer think of those crimes as the bog variety that humans commit against each other during wartime, but something darker and beyond redemption. I cannot sympathize with Hamas, and no amount of whataboutism or “cultural context” will change that.

I do believe that there are good, albeit suppressed, people in Palestine. War is cruelest to those too meek to ever pick up a weapon. There are many trapped innocents who are not complicit, who never voted for Hamas, who could survive this war and have a chance at the kind of life Hamas will never grant them.
